The bass reaches you halfway down the street. It rolls out of a basement doorway and through the soles of your boots, steady beneath the shriek of traffic overhead. Inside, people with long locks crowd around the speakers. Some have braided cable through their hair; some have grown it over the seams of their skull implants. Someone passes Root around. For a little while, nobody has to move at the city’s pace.
That is what outsiders see, and why they underestimate the Dreads
The Dreads are a gang. They hold streets, collect debts and protect the rooms where their people gather. They sell Root, but their territory matters more than any single sale. A stranger can come in, hear the music and be left in peace. Someone who threatens a Dread might find every door on that street closed to them by morning.
They modify their bodies like everyone else in Gigerpunk City. Their enhancements tend to be worn hard and repaired often: lungs that draw breath through industrial fumes, reinforced hands, old implants kept working long after the manufacturer stopped making parts. A Dread may spend months saving for one upgrade, then have to choose between buying it and helping someone they love survive the week. They make that choice knowing the city will punish either answer.
Root is how some of them take the edge off the pain. It can quiet an implant that never quite settled into the flesh, or make a terrible night seem further away. It can also leave a Dread sitting in the same room, listening to the same record, while the debt outside the door grows larger. They know this about themselves. The others know it too, and still make room on the bench.
The Gigerpunks call them slow, with their Buzz and their bright new parts. Sometimes a young Dread believes it. Then an older Dread walks past, carrying twenty years of scars and repairs in a body that still works, and the insult loses its force. The Dreads have no promise that they will outlast the city. Tonight, the bass is playing, their people are here, and anyone who comes through that door looking for one of them will have to face the rest.
