The Hunger

The Hunger insignia

The Hunger are young, beautiful and impeccably dressed. They favour dark clubs, expensive fabrics and enhancements fitted so finely that their bodies seem almost untouched by the city. Then one of them smiles, and you see the metal fangs. Beneath the skin lie a reinforced throat and organs remade to take nourishment from blood.

They chose these modifications. Members speak of appetite as refinement, as though they have discovered a superior way to live. They cultivate manners, expensive tastes and the attention of a room. Their arrogance is easier to bear from a distance than when one of them decides to pay you attention.

The street calls them Suckers. They despise the name, especially because it describes something they cannot explain away: blood sustains them now. Some arrange willing donors and honour their agreements. Others make promises they have no intention of keeping. Some turn the walk from a crowded club into a game of desire and fear; others wait in a dark passage for someone heading home alone. They look down on crude violence, though they are capable of plenty. Their elegance is part of how they hunt.

People learn to watch for a stranger who seems too beautiful, too interested and entirely unafraid of being followed. Yet beneath the Hunger’s vanity lies a fear few admit. They have remade themselves so completely that ordinary life may no longer be possible. One can stand in a crowded room and feel every eye upon them, while wondering whether anyone would come close if they were no longer beautiful.
